Overcoming health or fitness challenges

THE CHALLENGER: Keith Cordes, 65, retired FBI agent

THE CHALLENG: Building up strength and losing weight after a series of back surgeries

THE PLAN: Working out twice a week with a personalized program through CORE Sports Wellness Spinal Conditioning in Bend, CORE clients have the gym to themselves, and each machine is preset for their workout plan before they arrive.

THE EXECUTION: Cordes could barely stand up straight after six back operations. Unable to get any physical activity, the 6-foot-tall former college football player grew to 283 pounds and was showing signs of developing diabetes.

When he (Keith) went to check out CORE, he spent most of the visit leaning on a piece of equipment.

CORE owners Tom and Tammy Sliney developed a strength and conditioning routine for Cordes that allowed him to work all of his muscle groups without pain to his back.
He says he still sometimes cringes, expecting pain that never comes. “After 25 years of off-and-on back spasms and pain, and 11 years of surgeries, I anticipate things that aren’t there,” Cordes says.

THE PRICE TAG: $75 per one-hour session, comparable to the combination of health club membership and personal-training feed, and certainly less costly than other surgery.

THE RESULTS: After two and a half months of the workouts, couples with a low-carb, diabetic-friendly diet, Cordes has lost 25 pound and can just about stand up straight again. His legs are stronger than they’ve been in five years.

THE NEXT STEP: Cordes plans to complete for months with CORE and then continue his workouts at a fitness club. He plans to be in shape to return to fly fishing in the spring. “Here I am in the middle of a fly fisherman’s dream. Within 30 miles of here, there’s a hundred places to go fishing, and I can’t reach some of them,” he says.

“That’s on of my goals, to get the fly rod of the rack.”
